Farmeopathy February 2025 |
|
Hello there
It's February, the weather is variable, to say the least, but the days are lengthening, spring calving is underway and lambing has started for many.
To make ourselves useful month we feature:
Birthing Bundle - Two webinars discounted together featuring vet Chris Aukland and farmer-tutor Lynnie Hutchison.
The first of our brand new live seasonal Health Planning Workshops designed to get your farm thriving all year round - the first one is Birth & Early Growth.
Herb of the week is Plantain which has anti-inflammatory and healing properties
Holistic support for working dogs/dogs with sports injuries.
Dog attacks: flocks are particularly vulnerable at this time of year. Read how our members rallied to help a farmer whose sheep had been attacked by four dogs.
Finally, if you're busy calving or lambing, take care of yourselves, remember the homeopathy kit is there for you as well as your livestock. A regular dose of arnica for exhaustion and cocculus for 'nightwatching' will help you cope better.
Best wishes from Sara and the WHAg team.

COMMUNITY QUESTION OF THE MONTH |
|
Emotive cries for help are fortunately few in our Community Forum but this one was a real emergency and deserves wider viewing. To protect the farmer's privacy, we have not shared the post outside of the Forum.
Our farmer posted:
We have just suffered a 4 dog attack on a small flock of 16. It's a mess.
A bit of everything from broken legs, deep wounds, tears, missing ear, punctured tracheas and dead young lambs.... almost all of them have injuries. I am new to sheep and to homeopathy so . . . would be grateful for some more experience in this moment.
Fortunately one of our Livestock Health Advisors was very quick to reply.
Take a deep breath so you can get your head straight from the emotion of it all, and try and separate care for your sheep from anger at dog owners, so that you're calm near your sheep. Not easy I know!
Your vet will probably have given plenty of anti inflamatory and antibiotics but there's plenty you can do alongside to help the healing process.
Aconite and Arnica can calm the fear, several times in first 24 hours, then a few times next day, and then Arnica once a day for a few days, be guided by how shocked they still are and how flighty compared to normal.
Then look at each of the sheep, as you've multiple to deal with. Make a list with the remedies given to each sheep; this will make it easier as you treat them. You'll see the successes and be less worried as they drop off the watch list!
Look at Hypercal (Hypericum and Calendula) wash for any wounds, Ledum Pal for puncture wounds and Pyrogen to prevent an infection, as dogs teeth are often not that clean! Think also of Hepar Sulph for any infection that's threatened or brewing - you have to strike a careful balance between closing the wound as fast as you can and not trapping infection in. Keep going with Hypercal and Pyrogen, but keep an eye for any pus that needs to drain out. A day or so on the 12 tissue salts will help them all as a blanket restorative.
For the broken limbs, most people find Arnica - bruising, Calc Phos - strengthen bones, Ruta - bone pain at site of break. Symphytum speeds up healing and helps the bone knit together. Splinting, which if you're new to all this I'm sure your vet will have done for you.
In addition, the WHAg team came in to support the above suggestions and to make an important point - also treat yourself! An event like this will leave any farmer feeling angry and traumatised themselves. High potency Aconite and Staphisagria were top of the list of suggestions for this farmer.

Our farmer returned to the forum a few days later with an update
THANK YOU for all your support and emergency treatment. The vet has visited the flock this morning and we are through the other side. The sheep are calm and mostly recovering well. Hopefully there will be no complications with infections. A missing hogg returned this morning, 4 days after the attack, unharmed. My bottle reared lamb's trachea and leg is on the mend, I had a scare last night (rumbling tummy, agitated, stretching, belching and foul acrid breath) which homeopathy resolved.
I am also fine today (thank you for putting me on the treatment list ) I can't thank you all enough for the incredible community resource you have created here and for responding to my call for help!
Everyone with a dog needs to understand the reality for farmers of a dog attack. Even if your dog is angelic off the lead, it gives others permission to do it. Please help spread awareness of the seriousness of these events.
Oh, and don't forget to visit the Community Forum to get help and give advice.
