Cost Saving Health & Resilience

Imagine if you could stay out of what we call 'The Treatment Zone' - where livestock health problems are costing you time, money and peace of mind, and actually prevent predictable problems.

Imagine:

  • fewer losses during the birthing season;

  • stronger more resilient youngstock;

  • higher fertility rates/shorter calving intervals;

  • greater longevity in your best animals;

  • less infection and disease.

Imagine your costs going down as your livestock grow more resilient year on year >>>

What a Sick Animal Costs the Farmer

The costing examples below are taken from the Kingshay Dairy Costings Report 2023. While the costs relate to dairy, many of the problems will be familiar to the keeper of other livestock. Furthermore, these costs are before you start to factor in issues such as disease or youngstock problems.

Reasons for cows leaving the herd (culls)

  • Not in calf and fertility issues 25%

  • Highest yielders have highest culling rates of 35% increase from 32.8% last year

  • 50% of those culled are within their first three lactations

  • Mastitis (increased to 9.1% year on year)

Cost per problem

  • Mastitis - estimated cost per case £365 + an additional £30 since last year

  • Lameness - estimated cost per case £332 + an additional £20 since last year

  • Milk Fever  - est. cost per case £253

  • Difficult calvings - est. cost per case £399

  • Retained cleansings - est. cost per case £550

  • Abortions - est.cost per case £625

  • Metritis - est.cost per case £326

SOLUTIONS for PROBLEMS

The WHAg Foundation Course was developed over many years of working with farmers to understand their needs and problems. Sick animals = stress; they cost time, money and aggravation. The course teaches a system of proactive prevention focused on building year-round health and resilience. It provides solutions where conventional approaches don't have the full answer, saving money and time and reducing stress.

Productivity

Learn how to support animals to be productive for longer and at all stages of their lives, including older age. Yes, you can cull but replacements are costly and there is no guarantee that they will be healthy and productive. Truly healthy animals have high fertility, produce quality offspring that thrive, hold their condition, and give more and better quality milk

Mastitis

The best husbandry in the world cannot prevent every infection and mastitis and/or high somatic cell counts can present an ongoing challenge for dairy farmers, who are under increasing pressure to reduce or eliminate antibiotics. We teach strategies for early intervention in acute situations, to prevent problems from recurring in chronic offenders, and to mitigate the effects of the unique stresses of the dairy cow.

Lameness

Poor mobility, footrot and 'digi' cost £$+++ and can result in productive animals being culled. Whatever your system, and whatever your terrain or underfoot conditions, this is not inevitable. Foot health can be improved and lameness can even be prevented. Learn appropriate protocols for your system and environment that will keep your animals sound.

Resilience

By the end of the course you will have year-round strategies to help your youngstock and breeding animals develop resilience (and become less susceptible) to specific challenges such as routine stress (eg birth), infectious disease, parasites, poor climate and environment.
